Grand Jury...

The Trumbull County Grand Jury is a special jury under the charge of the Trumbull County Court of Common Pleas. The Grand Jury is randomly selected from registered Trumbull County voters to serve a four-month term, and it convenes bi-monthly in the Trumbull County Courthouse.

The Grand Jury decides whether a person should be tried for a serious crime. It does not try the case, but determines whether there is sufficient evidence to justify a trial. Assisted by the Trumbull County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, the Grand Jury considers all felony criminal cases bound over from the four Municipal and two County Courts. It also considers secret matters brought to it's attention by the Prosecutor's Office.

During Grand Jury, The Prosecutor's Office represents the State of Ohio and is responsible for presenting evidence and witness testimony. Generally, only prosecution evidence is presented. The Grand Jury must decide whether that evidence, taken by itself, justifies the formal charge of a crime. The Prosecutor advises as to the legal principles to consider. In only those cases wherein the Grand Jury finds probable cause does it return an indictment, allowing the case to proceed.

The findings of all cases remain secret until a formal report is presented to the judge, usually within a week of presentment to the Grand Jury. The results of each Grand Jury report are then printed in the Warren Tribune and the Youngstown Vindicator. The "secret" cases, however, remain sealed until the individual has been arrested.

The Grand Jury Division of the Trumbull County Prosecutor's Office is located on the second floor of the Trumbull County Courthouse, Courthouse Square, downtown Warren, Ohio. The office telephone number is (330) 675-2553.
